Faculty Friday Series: Meet Kathryn Medico

Kathryn Medico, from the United States, wanted to be a dragon or a drummer for the Beatles when she grew up, but her path led her to journalism. She is an author, former manager at Ritz-Carlton, and lecturer at Swiss Hotel Management School.

As a writer on issues of juvenile justice, her book A Perversion of Justice is currently in its fifth printing. She is also an international conference speaker on children’s rights. She is a graduate of the University of Derby and the University of Florida.

This is how she describes herself: “I’m a marketing and cultural diversity lecturer who spends a shocking amount of time grading dissertations. For the last 10 years, I have been living in Switzerland, butchering the French language. I believe the earth would be a much better place to live in if we solved every world problem with a dance-off.”

We asked her a few questions.

What does teaching from home look like?

Looks great! We are so lucky to still be able to connect with our students in these challenging times. Seeing their smiling faces, even on ZOOM, keeps my spirits high. Plus, in Leysin with the perpetual sun, glorious views, and cowbells, working from my balcony is a joy.

If you had one piece of advice to give your students what would it be?

Rather than seeking success, aim for self-actualization. If you develop only your brain and not your heart, you will only fulfill half of your potential.

What’s one thing about you that your students don’t know?

I am currently in the final stages of writing a fiction book inspired by three SHMS students I met ten years ago!

I recently bet a colleague I would iron their family's clothes for 6 months if my preferred candidate lost the US presidential election. (I dodged that bullet!)

My most prized possessions are my scooter named Lester, and my obnoxiously huge American refrigerator.
