Imagine having your Events Management class on a Sunday morning 35 km away from school – and your uniform? You can leave that at home…

215 students from SHMS ran alongside over 6000 participants in the 10K race in the Lausanne Marathon. Why? For education of course! The Sunday activity was part of the BA2 Events Management program offering a real-life perspective on sporting events on a large scale. The goal of the initiative was to offer students the opportunity to see, feel and reflect on the event organisation and logistics.

The marathon is a unique learning occasion for students outside of the classroom. The knowledge gained will help them to build upon their second project, where they are required to design an event (Sporting, Cultural or Business) for their own city.

The Events Management programme is designed to improve the soft skills of the students highlighting determination, commitment, teamwork, time management skills and goal setting. At the same time, we promote a healthy lifestyle in our schools showing the benefits of physical activity on personal development. Studies show that physically active people are seen by employers as healthier, more efficient and more reliable.

Running the race wasn't something easy to do but we all teamed up to get through it. In my banquet specifically, people who barely knew each other ran together making them get to know each other better. We are still talking about the times where we wanted to quit and the time we blasted on Eye of the Tiger on our phones as we came closer to the finish line.

When I was first told I would be running a 10km marathon as part of events class I started thinking of every possible excuse to miss it. I even tried to use the “I don’t have a pair of running shoes” excuse. However, looking back at how much fun I had running with my school mates, I’m glad that my excuses didn’t work. I made new friendships, strengthened some old ones and the Usain Bolt feeling that I had when I crossed the finish line is the cherry on top.

Although the participation for this event was optional, we had a full participation from all students! Congratulations!
